YarnKittymon: GU: ::has come back into town from another case, and asked Maeve to see a movie; the one playing is "Oh, for a Man," a musical about an opera singer who falls in love with a burglar::
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she quickly agrees to accompany him to the movies::
YarnKittymon: : ::there's a pretty funny cartoon before the film, though Guy doesn't laugh once. The movie itself does elicit some smiles from Guy...mostly as he imagines how he would've caught the burglar, though::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::once they're out of the theater he asks Maeve how she liked the film::
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she's trying hard not to let her mind jump to conclusions but with Guy knowing one of her dark secrets and this film hitting too close to home she cant help but to wonder. She glances at guy briefly before looking down at the pavement in front of her; quietly:: It was okay.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::frowning:: What's the matter?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::quickly:: nothing.
YarnKittymon: GU: I'm sorry if you didn't like it. If we had more than one theater in town things would be different. But there's supposed to be a new film in tomorrow; heaven knows who's bringing them in.
Maeve Owens: MV: I liked it okay... ::she stares at him for a moment, trying to determine if he had other motives for seeing this film::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::looks a little suspicous, though he quickly shrugs it off:: I'm a private detective, anyway. I have no obligation to try to stop people from breaking laws I don't approve of myself.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::frowns:: What laws?
YarnKittymon: GU: The laws that say it's illegal to bring in films with sound from outside. Whoever's responsible is going to get into some trouble when he's finally caught.
Maeve Owens: MV: Oh, those laws. Yeah... ::She frowns, someone immediately coming to mind but she quickly shrugs it off. Just because he did doesnt mean he still did. At least she hoped so for Libby's sake.::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::smirks:: The high and mighty mayor doesn't seem to care either, but I guess it's just because it's bringing in so much money.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::mutters:: Whoever put him in office should be shot.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::smirks:: I don't know that he's so terrible; just a politician. And if he *is* shot, you'll be a suspect now. ::still smiling::
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she glares at him, still on edge from the movie plot and his recent knowledge of her past:: Just because he's a politician he's terrible. And I said the person who put him there should be, not him. Unless of course he elected himself. ::smirks::
YarnKittymon: GU: I'd wager he helped--if nothing else, I'm sure he voted for himself. But the election's in November; we can put someone just as corrupt into office if you'd rather.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::grumbles:: They probably will whether I like it or not.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::shrugs:: You want to go get some coffee?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::nods:: sure
YarnKittymon: GU: ::takes Maeve to a quiet little bakery that only recently started staying open late, to try to attract the small crowds after the movies. it's not working so well so far, and so the place is fairly deserted; a friendly waiter seats them by the window::
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she sits down, not bothering to try and strike up a conversation, instead being unusually quiet::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::after they place their orders, very softly:: Did you just hear about the rumors, then?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::her eyes widen:: Which ones?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::hesitating just slightly:: Well...you and Toby, for once.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she frowns:: Oh. Yeah, I've heard em.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::looks rather irritated:: Completely ridiculous, but it's not exactly the kind of thing you can disprove.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::looking depressed:: No, its not. And Toby's going to have a hard time of it too.
YarnKittymon: GU: From what I understand, they'd have to prove Toby had the inclination to do it too. ::frowns:: Although he was living with that first woman for several years, and they weren't married. That won't look good, either.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::smirks:: What? Are you wanting to see if he'll hire you to find evidence to get him a quicky divorce?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::shakes his head quickly:: To be honest, I'd snoop around for free, if you asked me to. I like to be paid as much as the next fella, but the court discounts testimony from a paid detective.
Maeve Owens: MV: Its not my place to ask you to snoop around.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::shrugs:: Well, I'm not exactly in the business of charity, either. I've got my eyes open, but I'm not going to do too much work just out of the goodness of my heart, if it's not even a favor to you.
YarnKittymon: : ::the waiter brings their drinks and sets them down on the table::
Maeve Owens: MV: You'd have to ask Toby. He might appreciate the help but I wont ask you to especially if he doesn't want someone snooping around. I think you could help him and I would really hate to see that woman walk away with everything.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::picks up her coke and takes a sip::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::shakes his head:: Toby could just make *more* of whatever he lost, couldn't he? But if the court decides they're *both* adulterers, they won't grant the divorce. ::puts a spoonful of sugar into his coffee and stirs it, then takes a sip::
Maeve Owens: MV: ::grimaces:: Poor Toby...can he even win this thing? And him being able to make more of whatever he lost is not the point. *She* just shouldn't win.
YarnKittymon: GU: It's no easy thing to get a divorce, especially if one spouse doesn't want it and hasn't done anything wrong. By all accounts Lu *has* done wrong, but she's got a slick lawyer, and she might sway the jury. I think Toby *should* win, but you know Lu will just testify that Doctor Manners and Toby are both liars. And the jury might buy it.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::nods:: And now she's drug me into it. Which is only going to make it worse for him. ::mutters:: One of these days I'm gonna go board up Mrs. Caradson's windows so she cant ever look out of them again.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::smirks:: If you did that, we'd just have to deal with *her* all the time; she wouldn't spend any time in her house anymore.
Maeve Owens: MV: Thats true. ::sighs::
YarnKittymon: GU: I'm glad Mrs. Hart's been restrained...if she got free and forced me to act on my impulses again, Mrs. Caradson would have more to fear than her *windows,* for some of the other things she's said.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she nods::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::since he's bringing it up again, it's like he's waiting for Maeve to confirm it in her own words:: How could she even make up something like that?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::grumbles:: Because people see something and then jump to conclusions?
YarnKittymon: GU: But it's a *ludicrous* conclusion to jump to.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::shrugs::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::drinks a bit more of his coffee, frowning:: Mr. Quinn was quite a criminal, though, it seems. I can't blame her for questioning *his* motives.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::for one split second she's afraid her heart stopped beating for good but when it continues its normal thumping she fixes him with a an uneasy expression:: Excuse me?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::calmly:: Back in New York. The kidnapping.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she sits back, looking at him like he just grew two heads:: What?! You *checked*? ::bitterly:: Just how much *more* did you learn about his *crime and the events around it?
YarnKittymon: GU: Well, it's a wonder he wasn't charged with worse than some kidnapping; from the articles, it sounds to me like he was behind the whole plot.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she tries to control her breathing, attempting to calm the rising panic but she doesn't comment, refusing to give him any information that he may not already have::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::looks up at Maeve; quietly:: Don't worry...I don't understand what you saw in him, but I won't hold it against you.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::her teeth clenched:: I *knew* him before that happened. I just made the mistake of *trusting* him. ::as calmly as she can:: You didn't answer my other question. Why'd you check up on him?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::picks up his coffee for another sip:: I'm a detective, Maeve. I was curious.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::tightly:: What *else* did you check up on?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::raises his eyebrows:: Was there something I *should* have?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::forces a smile:: Of course not. Forget I asked. ::she doesn't look at all happy::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::quietly:: I *told* you, I'm a private investigator, not a police officer. I'm not sworn to uphold the law.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::sweetly:: Yes but obtaining certain information can give you some pretty good leverage. And you'd have a nice reward if you did happen to dig something up and turned someone in. Besides the fact that you have no *right* to use your connections or your profession to go digging into someones past when you have no *real* reason to other than curiosity!
YarnKittymon: GU: ::calmly:: I don't enjoy being uneven, either, Maeve.
Maeve Owens: MV: Uneven?
YarnKittymon: GU: For you to know every one of my failings.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::completely confused now:: What? What does that have to do with you digging into Donalds past?
YarnKittymon: GU: I just needed to know *he* wasn't perfect, either.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::rolls her eyes:: No one is perfect.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::softly:: Sometimes the dead seem to be.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::smirks:: Believe me, I know Donald was far from perfect but theres still more to that story than you're ever going to know. ::sarcastically:: And dont bother cause you'd have to travel forward in time.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::raises his eyebrows:: Oh?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::forces another tight smile:: Well, then again maybe not cause that future is kind of gone. ::she gives him a look that tells him he's just gonna have let that mystery eat away at him::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::drinks some more of his coffee, looking at Maeve, unsure of what to say::
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she just glaring at him:: So, what do you plan to do with your newly found information?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::softly:: What's to do? Poor Mr. Quinn is long dead, and no one he wronged needs reminded of those events.
Maeve Owens: MV: You can stop pretending you didn't find out because if you found out about him I know you know about me so you can just go ahead and come clean.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::looks at Maeve steadily:: The reports just say there was a fire, and they found matches at the site.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she folds her arms over her chest and shakes her head::
YarnKittymon: GU: Well, that's what the newspapers said, anyway.
Maeve Owens: MV: uh-huh. good for them.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::very softly:: It sounded to me like the police just wanted a scapegoat.

Maeve Owens: MV: ::she glances at him wearily:: Really? And?
YarnKittymon: GU: And they'd seen your fire act so you seemed as good a person to blame as any. They had no evidence, unless they were going to cover up the matches, but they might've railroaded you.
Maeve Owens: MV: Railroaded?
YarnKittymon: GU: Thrown out the evidence they have and lied to make you look guilty.
Maeve Owens: MV: Oh. ::she stands abruptly, her hands shake slightly and she folds them across her chest; quietly:: I have to go. ::she doesn't wait for a reply just practically runs for the door::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::stands, looking rather upset, and puts a couple coins down, then follows Maeve at a distance::
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she senses someone behind and she glances back. When she sees its him she turns around again and keeps on moving; her voice sounding choked:: What do you want from me?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::softly:: I want you to be you, Maeve...and I want you to feel the same way about me that I feel about you.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she shakes her head, hugging herself tighter and trying not to let the panic consume her, repeating over and over in head that he wasn't going to turn her over but it didn't do much good.:: And if I cant? Then what?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::slowly approaches, carefully putting an arm around Maeve:: I don't know.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she jerks away from him, her hold body completely rigid and theres an under current of fear in her eyes:: You dont *know*?
YarnKittymon: GU: ::looking a little upset:: I'm not going to fade away and *die* if you can't care for me, Maeve.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::shakes her head:: Thats not... ::takes a deep breath to calm her over active nerves:: Never mind. It doesn't matter. ::sounding hurt:: You had no right to go and check into that.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::softly:: It's all public record.
Maeve Owens: MV: So! That doesnt give you the right to go looking for information that I might have had no intention of even telling you!
YarnKittymon: GU: ::finally, quietly:: I'm sorry, then. I'll put it out of my mind as best I can.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::nods:: Best as you can... right. How did you look in public records? You didn't go calling up the police stations or what not while asking about did you? ::the fear is back in her eyes::
YarnKittymon: GU: Not about you, of course. I pretended to be a reporter and I needed information on Donald Quinn for a retrospective story about his life and death. And much of what involved him, happened to involve you.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::nods, looking a little relieved but not enough to replace the hurt and worry still prominent on her features:: Right. ::she walks away again::
YarnKittymon: GU: ::walks quickly to keep up with Maeve:: If you'd just said three sentences to explain it all to me I wouldn't have gone looking, you know.
Maeve Owens: MV: You never asked about Donald's past.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::*finally* has the good sense to stop digging the hole he's in any deeper; quietly:: Can I at least come see you tomorrow?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::sharply:: No.
YarnKittymon: GU: ::stares at Maeve, rather taken aback; turns to go, coldly:: Then I'll see you the day after that.
Maeve Owens: MV: If I happen to see you on the street, then, perhaps. ::she returns, just as coldly as she continues to walk away::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::sees Maeve arguing with Guy, and hurries after her when she leaves, looking pretty worried:: What's wrong?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::too lost in her own thoughts to see his approach and she jumps about a foot in the air when he speaks:: Oh! ::her hands fly to her heart as if she could keep it from beating right out of her chest; quickly:: Nothing, nothings wrong. ::tries to force a smile::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::softly:: You look scared like Mr. Quinn. I heard you arguing about him.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::hesistantly, almost afraid of the answer:: Heard?
YarnKittymon: JH: ::holds up a paper sack he's carrying:: Isaac had me go out and buy some popcorn; Eli and Dolly wanted some. I saw you and I was gonna come say "hi," but you and Mr. Stowe were arguing.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::swallows hard, wincing:: How much did you hear?
YarnKittymon: JH: Something about him pretending to be a reporter and looking for records for Mr. Quinn. Why does he care?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::sighs in relief then shakes her head:: He was just curious about Donald thats all.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::half-smiles at Maeve; quietly:: You still miss him, don't you? That's why you're upset?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she tries to cover up the truth and humor him by just nodding and offering a forced smile::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::smiles weakly:: You don't look so happy though. Can I cheer you up?
Maeve Owens: MV: I dont know... ::points at the bag:: looks like you have popcorn to deliver.
YarnKittymon: JH: But they can wait a little while.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::smiles weakly at him::
YarnKittymon: JH: And Toby could make popcorn anyway, even if it'd taste awful.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she does laugh a little at that, her nose wrinkling at the memory of the milkshake he made her:: In that case you might want to *hury* back to them... god knows what one of Toby's food creations could do to them. He made me a milkshake once and I've never been able to look at one the same way again.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::grinning:: I'll bet I could make it taste good, though.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::the corners of her mouth turn up a little:: I bet you could. Might even make that popcorn taste better. Or just about anything. ::laughs a little although theres still a touch of sadness to it::
YarnKittymon: JH: I've been trying to do other things besides chocolate. ::sheepishly:: I don't even like chocolate.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::her eyes widen:: Dont like Chocolate? ::pretends to look horrified:: I'm not sure I've ever heard of such a thing. Had any success on doing other things?
YarnKittymon: JH: ::smiles:: I made Eddie's lunch taste like really sour lemons. But it smelled like them too so he knew something was wrong.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::tries to stiffle a laugh:: Oh my. What happened?
YarnKittymon: JH: ::sobers, frowning:: He was saying bad things.
Maeve Owens: MV: Oh? What kind of bad things
YarnKittymon: JH: ::frowning:: About you and Toby and Mr. Quinn.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::her eyes slip closed and she frowns, shaking her head:: Oh. You didn't get in trouble at school did you?
YarnKittymon: JH: ::smirks:: No, and I don't think he knows I ruined his lunch either, so he can't beat me up.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::nods:: Thats good I suppose.... thanks for sticking up for us but dont get into trouble on our account... especially over some silly rumors.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::frowns:: But you and Mr. Quinn saved me, and Toby helped take care of me while I was sick.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::jokingly:: Yeah, and dont let it be for nothing and get yourself kicked out of school for fighting.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::shakes his head soberly:: Mommy used to tell me not to get into fights.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::sadly:: Yeah so did mine... and I never did listen to well either. ::smirks::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::thoughtfully:: I don't think it counts against monsters.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::laughs:: Too bad that doesnt make up for half of the fights I've been in. ::shakes her head::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::grins:: Do you want me to walk you home?
Maeve Owens: MV: Well, I could use the company I suppose. ::smiles, her previous problems nearly forgotten::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::grins, walking alongside Maeve:: You still like Isaac, right?
Maeve Owens: MV: Of course. He's a good friend.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::nods:: I'm glad.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::laughs a little:: Okay...
YarnKittymon: JH: Well, the way Mr. Stowe was talking to you sounded like a radio show.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::frowns:: We sounded that bad? I may have over reacted a wee bit. ::her frown deepens as she thinks about how easily he could send her back to jail::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::doing a fair imitation of Guy's slight accent:: "I'm not going to *die* if you don't care for me, Maeve."
Maeve Owens: MV: ::rolls her eyes:: Okay that was *him* being overly dramatic and he did confess once he wanted to get on a radio show.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::almost smiles:: I would've thought it was funny if you weren't so upset.
Maeve Owens: MV: Yeah. Thanks for cheering me up. ::smiles a little::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::slows down as they reach Maeve's house:: Are you happy now?
Maeve Owens: MV: Umm, sure. ::tries to put on a bright smile for his benefit::
YarnKittymon: JH: ::frowns:: You're not, are you? ::more brightly:: You can come back with me and Isaac and Toby and Dolly and Eli then!
Maeve Owens: MV: ::shakes her head;: I dont think thats such a good idea.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::looking rather disappointed:: Why not?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::quietly:: Its just better if I dont spend time with Toby right now... and add anymore fuel to the gossips fire. No matter if there is about four more people in the house.
YarnKittymon: JH: Oh. What if we lock the bedroom doors?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::shakes her head:: That doesn't help if people see me go in and dont see what else happens inside... they'll draw their own conclusions.
YarnKittymon: JH: Oh. ::pauses:: What if Toby made really big windows so everyone could see us?
Maeve Owens: MV: ::tries desperately not to laugh:: Now would you really want people watching you while you slept?
YarnKittymon: JH: He could change 'em back when we went to bed. Or just make really big curtains.
Maeve Owens: MV: Sounds like a lot of trouble to me.
YarnKittymon: JH: ::grins:: But we'd do it for you.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she's touched by that and can barely speak around the lump in her throat:: Thanks and I'd like nothing more than to spend the evening with you guys...maybe once everything has settled down I will? Kay? and of course if Toby and Isaac say its okay...
YarnKittymon: JH: ::still smiling:: OK. I guess I have to get home now.
Maeve Owens: MV: ::she nods:: Yeah, tell everyone I said Hi. And thanks for the cheering up. ::smiles::
