not in love with HIM). The other two girls aren't as close friends
with Michelle (though she loves them dearly), and seem a bit uncomfortable.

Michelle does find it a bit strange that all her loved ones have
bought her such, well, *girly* presents, but she smiles sincerely--though
she finds the dress a bit ugly, she knows she'll look beautiful
in it. "Thank you. I'll wear it to Father's next party."
She smiles. "Or perhaps you and I can attend a play together,
while *Hugo* stays at home." She practically winks, trying
to get her point across.
Her other friends have bought her mostly books, costume jewelry, and the like, although Ginger brought a new pair of riding breeches, which Michelle truly likes. But she thanks everyone graciously, and, frankly, she's accustomed to get everything she wants just by asking for it, so her happiness doesn't hinge on whether she gets presents she actually wanted or not. She's just glad everyone was thinking of her.

Ginger accepts Alan's offer, though most of the others simply
phone their parents or take a taxi. Michelle waves goodbye to
all of them, thanking them again for coming.
Michelle goes upstairs and fetches some shoes and socks to match her fancy dress, then comes back downstairs and picks up her new dress. "Shall we?" she asks Stella.
((Oooh, ooh, I know this one! Not that it matters because you were just describing (Alan didn't actually CALL them teenagers), but they didn't say 'teenagers' back then; they said 'young adults.' Crazy, huh? So most people would probably still think of people Michelle's age as kids anyway ^^;))

Hugo wheels after Stella. He's still far from graceful in his
huge, unwieldy wheelchair, but he manages. His eyes are cloudy.
"Do you ever wish we would've just been killed back there? Or at least that I had? You'd be free then, you know."

Stella was angry, and couldn't think right, she knew better to
say what was on her mind.
But half of it slipped out anyways.
"It would of been better for you, to get all that money, and don't have to worry about me, anymore, for crying out loud you could of walked!" She starts pulling at her hands causeing them to turn red. "I wish I were dead..."

Hugo closes his eyes, and reaches into his jacket, pulling out
his gun, holding it by its barrel. "I wish I were dead too,"
he says softly.
He looks up at Stella with bright eyes. "I'm not man enough to do it...and I could never watch you die, even if you wanted to.... But I know you're a better shot than your worthless brother. I trust you to shoot to kill." He slowly extends his hand towards Stella, holding his gun out to her, grip first.

Stella grabs the gun from his hand and stares at him.
She just ran up stares, not saying a
word.
She shuts a door behind her, andl locks it , and all they can
hear is a gun shut.

Hugo calls to Stella to stop, but he can't actually restrain her.
The moment she runs off he tries to follow, but she's already
up the stairs by the time he reaches their foot. He has to pull
himself out of his wheelchair to climb up the stairs, and it's
at least five minutes before he even gets up to the second floor.
"Stella!" he yells, looking around helplessly.

Stella's eyes widen as she dropped the gun, realizing what she
had done.
The tall man walked toward her her with
a surenge in one hand, and a bottle of liquid in the other.
You could see blood coming out of his side, staining his long
white coat. But Thalgore kept his grin on his face.
"Who'd you get in here!" She put her hand over her month. "and why are you here with that needle! In our room!"
Thalgore didn't look like his was in
pain, and kept walkiing toward her.
"I can help, let me talk to you and Hugo."
Stella open the door, and ran to Where
Hugo was.
"Darling!" She shrieked.

Hugo was pulling himself down the hall, laboriously trying each
door along the way, and calling out Stella's name at each one.
When he sees her, he quickly cries out, "Stella! Are you
all right? You mustn't kill yourself before I'm dead!" He
grabs her hand, trembling, in a half-seated position on the floor.
"Are you all right?" he murmurs.

She hugs him and starts crying.
"Oh my...oh oh...its Thalgore, hes here, in our room!"
She took a deep trembling breathe. "I shot him!"
Thalgore slid out of the room, and walks up to them slowly.
"She merely pireced the skin, she just caught a blood vein thats all." He bent down to look at Hugo in the eyes. "Well whats happening here?"

Stella back. He looks at Thalgore with narrowed eyes. "For
one thing, we seem to have a trespasser in our house. Get out."

"Your soul is yours, all this tonic will do is help you walk, but if you stop taking it, you stop walking." He paused. "You won't be able to dance, or run, but you could walk ok."

"I feel sorry for less adfortunate people, and I like to
play to see what they can do..."

the formula and instructions, then. I can't be so selfish to deny
the whole world a medicine like this...will it work for polio

but all his attention was on Hugo.
"The tonic really, is to help you,
but I really didn't do it for you Hugo, I did it for Stella..."
He looked down the hall way. "She is a very beautiful creature,
and for all means, why keep her here, unhappy.." He folded
his arms. "I guess you could say I'm feeling a human emotion
of love I guess, stupid huh? me love!? Ha!"
He layed down and took a deep breathe.
"If you could place, go into my right pocket and get a bottle
marked "healOne01" out for me please?"

Hugo hesitates, but finally follows Thalgore's instructions. "If
this tonic really works, you could sell it and be richer than
Mistress Madison."
((He really IS like the mad scientist in "Metropolis!" The only line I remember (just about) is something like "The only mistake I made was forgetting that you were a man and she was a woman." The mad scientist was actually making his robot-woman so he could put it in the shape of the other guy's dead wife...or did I tell you that already? I forgot; I told my dad the whole plot....))

He drinks the tonic, and sits back eyeing

"Its not money I'm after, but to rule this world...heheheh"
He starts off in a mad laugh,then stands up. "Now take the
tonic I made you and go out with Stella before both of you go
mad..." He pushes his eyeglasses up, and see Stella running
in with a doctor.
STella pause when she sees Thalgore standing.
"But he was shot, look theres blood everwhere!"
The doctor walks towards Thalgore, but
he runs down the stairs first.
"Enjoy your evening!"
STella puts her hands on her hips.
"Hes mad I tell you!"

is mad," Hugo says, raising his eyebrows. He holds out the
piece of paper to the doctor. "Is this the formula for a
medicine, or poison?"

The doctor looks at it.
"Well it looks like medicine, none of this stuff would kill
anyone, but its somthing I never seen put together befour..."
The doctor starts to read word by word naming what each ingridant
might do. "hmmm...Yes it is medicine.."
Stella looks at Hugo,then gives him a look, like a child would to a father begging for somthing.

Hugo takes Stella's hand and squeezes it, his expression a strange
mix of hope and fear. "If it kills me, take Thalgore to court.
Don't let him intimidate you; hire more guards if you must."
He pauses. "And whatever happens, promise you won't marry
him."
Without waiting for a response, he adds, "Even if this tonic is dangerous, it may work, and not just on myself. So I owe it to you--and to mankind--to try." He holds the syringe out to the doctor. "Please administer it to me."

Hugo can basically control his legs, though much of the strength
is gone from them. He keeps an arm around someone's shoulders,
for support, and cautiously moves his left leg, then laboriously
shifts his weight and moves his right. His eyes are wide, giving
him a kind of frightened look.
