((what date d'you think it should be?))

It's relatively quiet at the park and the sky overhead is quite dull and grey, threatening rain. Two people suddenly appear beside a tree near the lake although they aren't noticed by the few people in the park.

Dominick brushes a hand through his hair and then turns to his companion. "I asked Becky to meet us here. She'll probably turn up soon. Are you sure you're okay with this? I know it's a bit of a drastic method of getting away."

((The date is probably best decided once we see what happens Saturday and what date that is....))

The other young man is wearing baggy jeans and a Linkin Park T-shirt, which sets him off from the crowd much more than his mussed hair and otherwise plain appearance. He has a bright orange Superball in his hand, and he's squeezing it and then releasing. The ball melts to putty, and then reforms each time. He looks at the people in the park, kind of miserably. "Don't have much choice, do I? What are *they* staring at?"

"I don't know 1928 too well," Dominick replies. "That's why i asked Becky to come. It's why i chose this time period."
Out of the corner of his eye he sees her walking along the path towards them, her hair pulled back in a single ponytail, wearing a pale yellow top with a dark knee-length skirt. She's looking around for them and when she sees Toby she instantly breaks into a grin.
"There she is now."

Becky reaches them just then and the first thing she says is, "The least you could've done was gotten him changed into something a bit less obvious."

"Then I'll just wear this as long as I can get away with it," Toby says, not quite smiling. "You *promise* there's no labs here? They're not just something the history books forgot to mention?" He's still looking at the ground.

Daniel mrrs in a non-commital tone.

They can hear shouts and applause through the wall, though it's not the end of the show--it's probably the human-martian kiss about three minutes before the end that caused it, but occasionally other performances by an actor or two will draw a similar reaction.

"That's the one that's open; the other one's mine. $5 a week and it's yours. It has a nice view, but since it's open onto the street, it's a little noisy."

The room's already furnished, with a bed and a dresser, a bedside table with a lamp and a dime novel on it, and a couple amateur paintings on the walls. There's a tiny closet, open a crack, as the door doesn't seem to close properly. But the floor's carpeted and everything is pretty much clean.

"You probably don't want to take any electronic devices through there," one of the guards says cheerfully. A closer look shows that, despite his uniform, the guard looks rather like a dark brown lizard, including the tail. Christa's eyes widen, but she just looks at him and nods mutely.

Becky's a bit surprised by the lizard guy too but after living with Dan so long it isn't such a shocking vision for her.
"You ready to go through?" she asks. "You don't have any electronic stuff do you?"

Christa smiles weakly. "Don't have a thing except my clothes."

"No pacemaker or anything, right?" the guard asks quickly.

Christa shakes her head, takes a deep breath, and steps through the Gate. It's pretty anti-climatic, and she finds herself in a place not unlike a living "ghost town" or a Renaissance Faire ground, aside from a few prominent brick buildings which spoil the setting a bit. Most of the people are in modern clothes just a bit out of style, though a few are dressed rustically.

A guard points them in the direction of the registry building, since it looks like Christa's a newcomer. There's not much in the way of hand-checking for contraband at the moment; tensions are easing a bit--not that Christa or Becky have much of anywhere to hide anything anyway.

Christa finishes filling out the form, and then she and Becky are separated and taken to examining rooms, where they have to demonstrate their powers. Christa is relieved when the doctor promises they don't even write down what the powers are--although she doesn't entirely believe it, either. When it's all over, they're given laminated ID cards with Polaroid photographs and pointed to a building nearby where they can pick up their stipend, as well as register to move to a different town and receive their stipend then, the only rule being they have to pick it up by the 15th of each month in the city in which they're registered (though it does roll over for a few months...). It's not quite enough money to live on, unless the variant takes advantage of one of the free housing centers on the island. Christa doesn't worry about any of that, though; she gets a small room in an old but clean and quiet tavern, and says she'll stay there for a couple weeks, until her mother comes or sends word, at least.

"I guess our way of thinking was a little different," Becky replies softly. "But then, i never expected to be able to escape. I always wanted to but...only Fiona really thought it might happen one day but i just thought she was a romantic idiot."

((if toby feels like saying anything about fiona...she's more realistic these days and a bit more pessimistic about things being able to change, although she's a friendly and cheerful enough person on the outside...since i never really described her and he did meet her after all ^_-))

Toby smiles weakly. "That's what made us Americans, I guess. We're pretty fond of freedom. And that's the funny thing about hoping for the best...sometimes it happens that way after all." He pauses, frowning slightly. "'Romantic idiot,' huh?"

"Well that's the way she seemed in the labs," Becky says with a shrug. "I haven't met her since so i guess you know more about what she's like now than i do."

"I wouldn't call her romantic anymore, anyway," Toby says weakly. "And I don't think she was ever an idiot, but you met her before I did, so maybe she was." He's smiling a little more.

"Well...she wasn't really stupid, i just...thought it was stupid to have all this false hope when someone you know disappears everyday and doesn't come back," Becky shrugs. "I was rather cynical as a child...or...Rebecca was cynical anyway."

"Clayton felt the same way about me," Toby says softly. "But he hardly saw any point to escaping anyway, except not having to be tested. He couldn't go home."

"I think Clayton and i kinda thought the same way then. The lab was my life, i didn't have anywhere else to be," Becky says softly. "But Fiona had this dream about finding some sanctuary somewhere...then she heard about the island and you couldn't shut her up about it."

"Yeah, well, a telepath on an island full of people running away from something," Becky says with a shrug. "Guess she didn't like it much after all."

"A lot of people are running away from stuff," Toby says, shrugging. "Though maybe the island has more than its share. Have I thoroughly depressed you yet?"

"No more than i've probably thoroughly depressed you," Becky says, smiling.

"Now you see how i got through it," Becky says, cheerfully. "Most've the time i just pass it off as Rebecca's life and try not to think about it."

Toby blinks; he hadn't considered it that way. "Now I think I can see how you *can* separate yourself like that," he says thoughtfully. "And it seems like you had it worse than me, anyway. But we're not going to worry about any of that anymore, right?"

"Right," Becky says with a grin. "We're gonna go on loads of rides and have fun. Sound good?"

Toby grins. "Yeah, I guess we'll get along well enough." And he heads towards another ride.

((Unless you had any major revalations Becky was planning on making, or were going to do something else terrible to them "today," I'm afraid this one might be spent, though we could do another one taking place later, I suppose. ^_^))

((Libby, having a functional relationship? What the deuce? ^_- She's actually kind of playing the field right now (between the rich playwright/Hollywood guy she at least was seeing (though since Cleo's playing him, maybe he moved back to Hollywood) and still missing Ethan, but I'll try to think of some kind of adventure she might have...whether she winds up finding a man or not. ^_^))
